After a powerful 2 week run at the number 1 spot, The Smurfs have finally been dethroned by none other than Bean himself. Yes, Johnny English Reborn took the top spot while taking the little blue guys down a notch. The Three Musketeers also didn’t fair too badly making it the position 3 obviously pulling in bigger sales numbers due to the 3D ticket price. My movie date on Sunday was packed with folks clamoring to watch The Help for second week which reflects in it’s rise to numero 8.

Johnny English: Reborn

And with that, the Zookeeper and Spy Kids 4 finally leave the charts. The big hitters this week are Killer Elite (review here) and Contagion along with art house release Black Butterflies. Contagion, the disease horror, has had a lot of positive response overseas garnering largely favourible reviews from critics across the board. Black Butterlfies, the tale of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, will most likely turn heads due to it’s local context and the emotionally unstable character on which the story is based.

Overall, an interesting weekend ahead. I’m sure The Smurfs and Johnny English will battle again for top honours but the rest is really a mystery.

[Update] Contagion, contrary to what I have stated, does not release this weekend. Fright Night is in fact one of the releases that I will be covering before the weekend along with Black Butterflies and Killer Elite. Apologies.
