Initially I was uncertain what to expect with American Pie: Reunion – my only experience with the franchise was watching a few minutes here and there while skipping through TV channels and previously the high school murmurings on it when it first released in cinemas. Reunion was my gateway into American Pie and as R Kelly sings in the intro “Your mind says no, but your body says yes”…I wish my eyes said “no” as well.
The group of overly hormonal youngsters of 1999 have grown up – marriage, fatherhood, and dead end jobs have claimed the once vibrant lives of Jim, Kevin, Oz, Finch, and Stifler. Now 13 years after their first outing, the group return to their roots for a high school reunion but their real mission is to reclaim the youthful vitality that they had seemingly lost.
In all honesty Reunion wasn’t as bad as I had initially expected – it’s a raunchy comedy blended with the tried and tested reunion tale. Based on reputation I was expecting much more in terms of grossness but it’s excessiveness rarely reaches overkill. In the end it’s all about sex and if you feel up to a film stuffed with juvenile sex jokes and cringe-worthy gags performed by adults, then this is just for you. Speaking of sex, the rating seems a little off – it’s been given a 16 with Language, nudity, and violence…strange eh? The nudity can be pretty extreme at times so if seeing another man’s doodads is something you’d like to avoid then give this one a miss. Reunion is pretty much on the same lines as the previous films so you know what you’re getting yourself into, obviously if you missed the first three intentionally or didn’t like them, this won’t hold any appeal.
