31 Second Review: My Week With Marilyn

There are Marilyn reviews too numerous on the internet, lets see if we can uncomplicate the vast songs of praise into something a little more understandable.

There are no figures in pop-culture more celebrated than that of Marilyn Monroe, you can take that to the bank – so when the time comes to put her back in the spotlight, can any one actress capture her complex feminine magnetism?

Marilyn Monroe arrives in England with her husband to play the role of Elsie Marina in Lawrence Olivier’s “The Prince and the Showgirl“. All does not go well as the two personallities clash with monroe frequently the bane of Olivier’s discontent. In the middle is young Colin (Redmayne), an assistant to Olivier, who finds himself involved in a romantic fling with Marilyn while tending to her during the shoot.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN

My week with Marilyn’s story isn’t anything special, if anything it is a platform for the true star of the production – the acting. Williams as Monroe shows a multidimensional character study, expertly conveying the depth of Monroe’s characterists from her bubbly on screen persona to the insecure child in the confines of her bedroom. This award worthy performance is but one half of the duo with Branagh’s sublime performance as the excentric Larry Olivier rounding out the production.

Lately the abanudance of biopic style films seem less focussed on anything other than accurate portrayels of the deceased – the characterisation takes always takes centre stage but in this case, it’s what makes the film great which isn’t a bad thing at all but we can be thankful that Simon Curtis builds a believable world for these larger than life characters to roam in.

One Response to 31 Second Review: My Week With Marilyn

  1. Just something interesting. THere’s a new tv series starting in the US that’s based on a broadway musical that is based on Marilyn Monroe. I wonder if the timing of these two are intentional.
