First trailer: WRECK-IT RALPH

This really is a big week for video games and hot off the internet press comes the video game themed animation Wreck-It Ralph by Disney. In the film, Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is a villain in a 30 year old Donkey Kong style arcade game. Ralph, unhappy with his title decides to leave his game and try out some new opportunities as a hero. During the course of the film we are introduced to new characters and some familiar faces, some feature prominently in Ralph’s therapy sessions.

While this film looks delightfully quirky, I’m having a hard time seeing it becoming a success – it’s true that video games are no longer exclusively nerdy but it almost seems too specific and some of the humour seems a little out of place. It’s got a Toy Story vibe to it, that much is certain, and it looks like it’s exploiting that angle well but there’s something about Wreck-It-Ralph that doesn’t seem to have that kind of mass appeal charm. Still, I can’t wait to get another look at this and see if any more cameo characters crop up (which I’m sure they will).

Wreck-It-Ralph releases on January 25 2013 in South Africa. The film is directed by Rich Moore and stars the voice talents of John C. ReillyJack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.
