If it wasn’t enough that The Expendables 2 is releasing today, we have just a little more old to share in the form of two trailers from our favourite action heroes!
There’s something that’s truly endearing about the older action star. Before The Explendables hit the screens, Clint Eastwood was the first to make something of an encore with his Gran Torino – while it was more a drama than action, it would be hard to deny that it drew upon that “hard as nails” personality that he developed in his younger years. I’m putting a lot of faith in The Last Stand as it’s is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the leading man position since taking up the government game. The modern action film is very different to the time he was on the big screen, more than ever, there’s an emphasis on gritty realism and it looks like he’s easily adapted to it.
The same however can’t be said about Sylvester Stallone, who has just been shaking the same old stick for the past decade and it hasn’t gotten any fresher. He’s just that old guy that refuses to recognise his limitations – that’s not a bad thing in reality, but it’s been way too overdone in cinema…the modern audience is looking for heroes with a weakness (whether it be mental or physical) in order to create a memorable film. Right now I’m thinking about Die Hard 4 and how utterly forgettable it was due to Bruce Willis’ inability to move with the times.
Don’t get me wrong, Stallone looks great for his age (or at least his body does) but in the end, he’s just an old man that refuses to accept that he’s old. Both films will undoubtedly be generic action showcases for the two old men but there’s nothing wrong with a little campy throwback to the good old days by the masters – in fact, I recommend it.
The Last Stand releases on 8 March 2013. It’s directed by Kim Jee-Woon and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Johnny Knoxville and Jaimie Alexander.
Sylvester Stallone’s comic adaptation of Bullet to the Head is directed by Walter Hill and stars Stallone, Jason Momoa, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje,Sarah Shahi, and Christian Slater. The film releaes on 29 March 2013.
